In spring 2021, the City of Castlegar is joining efforts with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to complete upgrades to Columbia Avenue/Highway 22 from 24th Street to 18th street. The project will renew the asset life of underground water and storm utilities and improve transportation facilities for both pedestrians and highway users.

When completed, this project will deliver many community safety and accessibility improvements and provide more mobility options and promote economic development and tourism in Castlegar. The work will include:

  • Replacing aging water mains and services
  • Replacing aging and undersized storm sewer mains
  • Installing new storm drainage infrastructure including curb and gutter
  • Repaving Columbia Avenue/Hwy 22
  • Addition of a two-way center turn lane to improve vehicle safety and traffic flow
  • Providing safe cycle lanes for cyclists and other active transportation users
  • Installing street trees, banner poles, street furniture and improved bus shelter facilities
  • Connecting existing sidewalks with new sidewalks for pedestrians

Current Status

From September 8 until October 16, FortisBC crews are relocating an overhead electricity line along Columbia Avenue to support efforts to improve the highway system in Castlegar. During construction, there may be traffic interruptions with possible single lane, alternating traffic and there may be instances where residential driveways may be blocked. In these cases, residents will receive advance notice of this work being done. For more information: Call 1-866-436-7847, email electricity.customerservice@fortisbc.com or click here.

This fall, the City of Castlegar will be sharing detailed project information with the community and hosting in-person and online sessions so the community can meet the project team and ask questions.
